Substitutions and Variations

Here are a few delicious variations when making this honey wheat bread machine recipe:

  • Adjusting Honey: You can adjust the amount of honey to your preference. For a sweeter loaf, add an additional tablespoon of honey.
  • Milk Substitutes: If you don't have milk, you can substitute it with water or unsweetened plant-based milk.
  • Adding Nuts and Seeds: For extra flavor and texture, incorporate ¼ cup of chopped nuts or seeds (like walnuts, pecans, or sunflower seeds) during the first beep of your bread machine (if it has one).

Tips for Success

  • Use room temperature ingredients for optimal results.
  • If your honey is thick, warm it slightly to make it easier to measure and incorporate into the dough.
  • Measure ingredients accurately for a consistent loaf.
  • Don't peek too often! Resist the urge to open the lid of your bread machine while the bread is baking, as this can disrupt the rise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use active dry yeast instead of bread machine yeast?

Yes, you can use active dry yeast. Just add it last on top of the flour.

Can I use all bread flour instead of whole wheat flour?

Yes, you can substitute all bread flour for the whole wheat flour. However, the bread will have a slightly different taste as the whole wheat flour adds a nutty flavor.

What if I don't have a bread machine?

You can still make this bread by kneading the dough by hand and then baking it in a loaf pan.

My bread machine doesn't have a "white bread" cycle. What setting should I use?

Most bread machines have similar settings. Look for a cycle titled "basic," "classic," or "bread" - these will work well for this recipe. You can also adjust the crust color setting to your preference.

This bread is so tasty! I will definitely be making again. It’s exactly what I wanted for sandwich bread.
I did change flour suggestion. I used 3 cups of wheat flour and 1 cup of all purpose, white flour. When I make again, I will increase the salt by 1/2 teaspoon, making it 2 teaspoons. Other than that all things remain the same. Thank you for the recipe.
